Thought on Last project

I hope you all enjoyed this project whether you made an animated film or illustration. For this project, me and Adrian decided to make an origami stop motion with a simple story about a fox and a box, and I want to share some thought on the process. First of all, it was not easy to animate a paper object as we expected because we need to consider the folding and the metamorphosis. It also take a long time preparing the props and paper animals. We have to consider how to express the animals’ emotions. For instance, by moving the ears and tail of the fox it is able to manifest its emotions. Secondly, the sound effect help the animation a lot. It bring the paper dolphin and frog to live. I really like the mixture of sound and object animation, which is different from what other forms of animation can offer. I think I would definitely love to try more stop motion in the future. Lastly I want to thank Adrian for being a great comrade. We have been collaborating since the first project. And I fell that each project we feel it keeps getting better and better. To sum up, I think I have learnt a lot from different experimentations from this and other projects. I remember a line from the other professor that I remember to date- in-between is important. I really appreciate this class offers a lot of freedom to do our projects and facilitate the creativity within us.

Weekly Blog Post- Documentary Animation

Since the other lectures we talked about how cultural revolution influences Chinese and Hong Kong animation. This animated documentary, which is made by Jennifer Zheng, Kingston University. The story is about Chinese mother and her British born daughter speak as adults for the first time.

I like her UPA animation style. In her website, she also posted about her process of making Tough  such as character design and storyboard.

Research paper and project 4

Hello Fellas! I hope you all had a great progress towards your finals!  This post is to update my research paper and project 4. For my research paper, I was going to write about Satoshi Kon. But due to the lack of materials about him available in library, I decided that I will switch my topic to the father of computer animation- John Lasseter. As Mr Lo said in his lecture, CG animation changed the whole animation and visual effect industry. I want to write about how his inspirations came from as a pioneering role at Pixar in the CG history and his animated films.

As for project 4, Adrian and I are teaming up again to make an Origami short. We would update you in the following days!

Weekly Blog Post- Rising Hong Kong Animation

It was pretty interesting to learn the early history of animation from Mr Lo last class. I would like to share some amazing animation from a rising animator from Hong Kong too. Tale of Rebellious Stone is from final project animation from a local student Tommy Ng. What amazes me is that the quality of story telling and animatio I see from a Hong Kong student. They formed an animation studio called Paperbox Creations after graduating.

Shear Shark is a film about two local kids growing up in an era of resettlement. The film was exhibited across different countries includinand won a couple of awards.

What caught my attention first is this game promotion video that his studio made for Assassin’s Creed.

Below is an inspiring Tedtalk presentation by Tommy Ng. Unfortunately it only comes in Cantonese for now. I will update it if I can find one with English subtitle. Basically he talked about the issue of creative industry in Hong Kong: lack of pre-production process, the importance of collaborative work and originality. And I really agree with his point that originality doesn’t mean that we have to create something in the sense that is fancy and never seen before. But the fact that artists have to create something that kindle their passion and personal perspective honestly.
